Meet the Trainees

Beatrice Stefan, Roman Hisch und Tina Neuwirth

Meet the Trainee: Beatrice Stefan

Anchored in Austria – at home worldwide
4,000 applicants stepped up. Now, only 22 are still competing. The last round of testing at the ISS Assessment Centre has been completed This is now followed by a period of anxious waiting. Will I make it? Will I be accepted into the ISS Management Trainee Programme? And if I am really one of the 14 finalists – what will I have to face then? These are thoughts that are certainly running around the heads of each and every candidate. Already during the professional application process, I knew that I always wanted to work in this company. The solidarity of whole staff and the joint goal of becoming the best service organisation worldwide was evident from the very first moment on - and it inspired me. However, was the interest also mutual?

Starting out – what am I going to face?
Then, finally, the notification of acceptance that is long yearned for arrives. Then, the initial weeks as a trainee commence. It was only during this time that I had become aware of how big the company is and how wide its range of services is. ISS staff are active not only in Austria, but can be found all over the world if you walk through life with open eyes. And now I was one of them too! The trainee programme itself exceeded all my expectations. Not many companies offer a young member of staff the chance to become acquainted with the company from all perspectives. In addition, it is hard to find a place where so much appreciation is shown toward trainees as is the case within the ISS family. I had hoped that the work would be wide-ranging, challenging and interesting. In turn, it was unexpected that the interpersonal factor is what makes ISS so distinctive as an employer. This is because the – transnational – collaboration and the solidarity between the trainees is one of a kind. During the course of these months, I did not only find new colleagues across borders, but also established new friendships – for life.

Leaving – and what happens next?

The trainee programme lasted for a period of 18 months. What an exciting time! And the perfect preparation for what happens afterwards. This is because, during my stay in Switzerland, during the course of the international exchange, I got the chance to start a new key account in my region. To implement what I learned and to manage 50 members of staff from one day to the other brought my professional experience a huge step further. On the one hand, the operative day-to-day business, on the other, the strategic further development of the account – both make this job so exciting to me.

For this reason, there is also only a single conclusion – and a piece of advice for all those who may be interested: Apply for the ISS Trainee Programme! I would do it again any time.

Meet the Trainee: Roman Hisch

After going through the three-month recruiting process, the professionalism and level of which is unparalleled, I am now among the three successful Austrian trainees. On 1 September 2015, a total of 37 trainees from 19 countries pursued ISS careers. During our first month, we became better acquainted with the ISS world within the scope of an intensive training programme. Thereby, the fields of finances, legal aspects and operational activities with a key centre of focus. At the end of this introductory month, all the trainees made a collective visit to the headquarters of ISS located in Copenhagen.

The subsequent second period finally taught me more about our daily business. In short, my cleaning skills were in demand. Getting up at five in the morning, starting work at six o’clock. The experience of working with our new staff at eye level and acknowledging that many people perform this activity on a daily basis with a great joy still characterises my daily working life and my work attitude. Based on the practical experience, together with different hosts ranging from supervisors all the way to area managers, I have become acquainted with the individual elements of management and have gained important insight.

In conclusion, I have assumed the responsibility for a two-month special cleaning project where I was faced with numerous challenges both with regard to customers as well as staff. As support for the regional contract management of a global customer, within the scope of my stay abroad in Bucharest, in the end, I was even able to gain insight into operations above country level. Today, this helps me to better understand the global connections within the ISS Group.

The programme prepared me well for my current duty as an area manager. Thereby, the Austrian-wide network that I was able to build up within ISS is the most important to me.

Meet the Trainee:Tina Neuwirth

An exciting 18 months is now coming to a close and my new challenge in key-account management is about to begin. During the last one and half years as an ISS management trainee, I have been prepared for this position in the best way possible. During the first weeks of the trainee programme, together with other Austrian trainees, I experienced intensive training entailing ISS systems and concepts, as well as the areas of finance, human resources management and sales.

Particularly tours 1 and 2 were exciting, where I was able to learn about all the service areas of ISS from the ground up. Here, I saw the contribution that our staff make on a daily basis and the commitment they show to our customers when representing ISS. Tour 3 introduced me to the field of key-account management where I was able to strengthen my process optimisation and staff management skills. During the last months, I was able to implement my own ideas and have assumed the responsibility for various projects. Directly collaborating and working together with our largest key-account customers was particularly fun for me.

A large part of the training included international experience. On the one hand, due to workshops in Copenhagen, London, Paris, and Athens, and on the other hand, due to my three-month stay in Switzerland. Here, I was not only able to build up a great network within the ISS, but was also able to gain really great friends among a total of almost 30 trainees from throughout Europe.

After these 18 months, I feel prepared for my new position in key-account management in the best way possible and am looking forward to this challenge.
